Well over half the electricity sold by United REMC is for industrial use. We have a variety of commercial and industrial accounts we serve. In addition, United has taken an active role in helping promote economic development throughout our service territory, and points beyond.

Many electric cooperatives tend to have a much larger residential load compared to industrial. United, meanwhile, has nearly 60 percent of its total load dedicated to industry.

Our largest power user is the General Motors Truck Plant, located at the intersection of I-69 and I-469. The facility has a very strong reputation among GM plants nationwide for the quality of products made there. United REMC is proud to be the electric provider for such a successful operation.

And just south of GM is the new Vera Bradley plant, likewise served by United. Vera Bradley has completed the first of three phases of its new corporate campus.

In addition, United serves other commercial ventures, both large and small. Regardless of the size of the company, it is our commitment to offer the best service possible to meet their business needs.

United likewise serves several industrial parks and areas. Among those are the Engle Ridge Industrial Park on the southwest side of Fort Wayne; the Warren Business Park at I-69 and Ind.-5; Park 24 on the east side of Huntington; and the Markle Industrial Park, located just off I-69 and U.S.-224.

In addition, United serves the new Silverado Industrial Park, which is located just to the south of General Motors. While the park is new with no tenants as yet, the site has been deemed by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) as “shovel ready,” meaning all infrastructure is in place for any company wishing to locate there.

United has become active in a number of economic development efforts. The utility has supported economic development efforts both in its own service territory as well as throughout northeast Indiana. The co-op routinely support groups such as the Regional Marketing Partnership, Huntington County United Economic Development, and the Wells County Chamber/Economic Development, among others.

In addition, United’s wholesale power supplier, Wabash Valley Power Association, is actively involved in economic development across Indiana. Wabash Valley has a full-time economic development specialist and participates in and is involved in many different ED groups and organizations. Wabash Valley Power Association maintains a Site & Building Database on their website to help businesses fill their needs for either new construction or existing buildings.
